For much of my life, I have identified as a painter. Painting and drawing were the mediums I could access and teach myself. I spent summers painting in my “studio”; a 5x5 foot space under the stairs where I spent hours creating. I loved the softness of watercolor, though I found myself always wishing I could grab the painting and mold it with my hands. I felt limited by its two-dimensional form.
It wasn’t until a friend invited me to take a sculptural class at the Archie Bray that I got a chance to work with clay. For the first time, I could bring to life the 3-dimensional forms I’d dreamed of.
Nowadays, I spend my time in the studio sculpting large, organic forms inspired by the desert I grew up in. When I’m not sculpting I find joy in designing functional ware inspired by my grandmas' 1970s-style kitchen. In making this functional ware my love for pottery and love for painting come together.
